Jordan Junior Wrestlers Scale the Brighton Tournament

(Sandy, Utah) Jan. 10, 2010 — Twenty-one members of Jordan Junior Wrestling recently headed across town to Brighton High School to compete in the Brighton K–9 folkstyle wrestling tournament.  Of those 21, 20 placed, including nine in the finals, resulting in four champions.

“The growth from the previous week was good,” said Coach Bill Kilpack (III).  “We had quite a few move up their placement from last week to this one, and some beat opponents who had beaten them earlier in the season.  Can't ask for much more than that.”

The team was led by brothers Alex and Spencer Maxwell of Sandy, and Trever Glaubensklee of Sandy.  Alex, 12 years old, won the championship with hard fought, very tactically wrestled matches in the 7th Grade 83-pound bracket.  Spencer, 9 years old, dominated his weight, pinning all but one opponent, who he beat 6-0, without allowing a single point to be scored against him in the 3rd Grade 65-pound bracket.  Glaubensklee, 7 years old, won the championship in the 2nd grade 50-pound bracket by pinning every opponent but one, who he beat 15-2.

Also earning a gold medal was 7-year-old KC Weiberg of West Jordan, who won the 2nd grade 86-pound bracket.

Making it to the finals were five athletes.  Caden Bushell of Sandy, 13 years old, finished second at 8th Grade 130 lbs; Brian Morris of Bluffdale, 11 years old, finished second at 5th Grade 73 lbs.; Alex Muti of Sandy, 7 years old, finished second at 2nd Grade 60 lbs.; Kelly Glaubensklee of Sandy, 7 years old, finished second at 2nd Grade 65 lbs.; and Weston Nielsen of Bluffdale, 4 years old, finished second at Kindergarten 45 lbs. 

Placing third were seven young athletes: 11-year-old Hayden Heninger of Saratoga Springs, 6th Grade 73 lbs.; 12-year-old Jared McMillan of South Jordan, 6th Grade 96 lbs.; 10-year-old Tyler Fay of South Jordan, 5th Grade 65 lbs.; 10-year-old Ty Carlson of West Valley City, 5th Grade 70 lbs.; 9-year-old Osai Muti of Sandy, 4th Grade 86 lbs.; 8-year-old Garrick Kilpack of Sandy, 3rd Grade 60 lbs. (Bracket A); and 5-year-old Levi Ericson of Sandy, Kindergarten 55 lbs.

Placing fourth were four wrestlers: 13-year-old Trent McMillan of South Jordan, 8th Grade 76 lbs.; 10-year-old Christian Sainsbury of South Jordan, 5th Grade 70 lbs.; 8-year-old Payton Heninger of Saratoga Springs, 3rd Grade 60 lbs. (Bracket A); and 8-year-old Gavin Carlson of West Valley City, 3rd Grade 60 lbs. (Bracket B).

Also competing was Clay Moss of Sandy, 8th Grade 145 lbs.

"This was a pretty exciting tournament," said Coach Richard Fay.  "We had some kids win their first matches, we had some good payback matches, too, showing some real growth in skills and maturity.  A good tournament with a good showing."
