Jordan Junior Wrestlers Storm Into Springville
(Sandy, Utah) Nov.
28, 2006 — Thirty members of Jordan Junior Wrestling traveled to
Springville to
compete in the Champions folkstyle wrestling
tournament.
Of those 30, 24 placed, including seven champions.
“This was a great opening tournament for the wrestlers,” said Coach Bill Kilpack
(III). “Since they
didn't split the middle school and junior high divisions, there were
some problems, including a couple injuries, but things turned out
pretty well in the end.”
Winning championships were seven
athletes: six on the elementary team, and one on the junior
high/middle school team. The six elementary team champions
included 5-year-old Garrick Kilpack of Sandy,
who wrestled in the Advanced 40-pound Flyweight (ages 6 and Under) bracket;
6-year-old Spencer Maxwell of Sandy, in the Beginner 46-pound Bantam
(ages 7 and 8) bracket, in his first tournament ever; 7-year-old
Cole Moody of West Jordan, in the Advanced Bantam 55-pound bracket;
9-year-old Matt Lee of Draper, in the Advanced Midget (ages 9 and
10) 61-pound bracket; 9-year-old Tayler Johnson of Draper, in the
Advanced Midget 71-pound bracket; and 10-year-old Bronson Battaglia
of Sandy, in the Intermediate Midget 74-pound bracket. In the Junior
High division, eighth grader Adam Maxwell of Sandy won the 100-pound
Intermediate bracket.
Taking second were nine athletes: three
on the elementary team and six on the junior high/middle school
team. The elementary runner-ups included six-year-old Jed Lee
of Draper, in the Advanced 43-pound Bantam bracket; 9-year-old Tyler
Schwendiman of South Jordan, in the Advanced 64-pound Midget
bracket; and Helaman Suesue of Salt Lake City, in the Advanced
73-pound Bantam bracket. The junior high runner-ups were 12-year-old Jake
Ribald of West Jordan, in the Advanced 100-pound bracket; Tanner
Barr of Taylorsville, and Zack Grandy of in the Beginner 88-pound
bracket.
Placing third were five young athletes:
three on the elementary team and two on the junior high/middle
school team. The elementary bronze medalists included Devin
Johnson of Draper, in the Advanced 52-pound Bantam bracket; Justyn
Ribald of West Jordan, in the Intermediate 58-pound Bantam bracket;
and Semisi Vakapuna of Magna, , in the Advanced 73-pound Bantam
bracket. The junior high bronze medalists were Kevin Maxwell
of Sandy, in the Beginner 76-pound bracket; and Marcus Teller of
West Valley City, in the 132-pound Intermediate bracket.
Placing fourth was MacKelti Kilpack of
Sandy in the Beginner 68-pound Midget bracket. Placing fifth
was Justin Schwendiman of West Jordan in the Advanced 68-pound
junior high division.
Also competing were William Kilpack of Sandy, in the Advanced
88-pound junior high division, who had to withdraw with an injury;
Zayne Sayers of Sandy, in the Advanced 132-pound junior high
bracket; Nick Hulbert of Salt Lake City, in the Advanced 104-pound
junior high division; Brayden Schwendiman of South Jordan, in the
Advanced 76-pound junior high bracket; Mitch Nazer of Sandy, in
the Advanced 92-pound division; and Townes Falcon of West Jordan, in
the Advanced division.
Jordan Junior Wrestling is a folkstyle
wrestling program offered through Salt Lake County Recreation,
operating out or Jordan High School in Sandy. The middle
school/junior high team is for grades five through nine; the
